It wasnt completely necessary because these clock batteries last VERY LONG but I was already replacing all batteries on my consoles and I kinda expect that my newly purchased PS3 never had its battery replaced like my other consoles. If you've done this and something's not working, then you either have a dead CMOS chip (they do degrade over time and can fail as with any other 'memory' chip), or you have some other problem. I like the Super Slim too but it is even HARDER to replace the clock battery (impossible without complete disassemble), but I simply dont understand why Sony purposefully extended the metal shield to cover the battery slot on the 35000 since on the previous Slim models they are on the EXACT same place but easily reachable because the shield doesnt cover the battery slot. The CMOS battery shouldn't have anything to do with authentication - you should be able to replace a dead CMOS battery and everything should work as normal. It is a shame this model is so annoying to replace the battery because I think it is one of the best models of the PS3 so far, I know it is not CFW compatible but now with HEN you can do almost everything CFW does and this model in particular have very good temp values and it is very quiet compared to my 20000 which was a hot jet engine even with Arctic Silver thermal paste. What I did worked but It was risky, I wasnt interested in repasting thermal paste and such so I picked a pair of nail pliers which are small and cut through the holes to make the battery compartment accessible and replace it, after this I picked a brush and a vacuum cleaner to get rid of any metal shards and dust it created to avoid short circuit. So, you should only replace the CMOS battery if you can connect your PlayStation 4 to the internet. It is dumb because most PS3 consoles have the battery sitting below the blu ray drive, but some are easy to access, liek my previous 20000 model, but my current 35000 the battery is on the exact same place but the motherboard shield extends and covers it.
